1. Nobody is indispensable

Often this statement is used in organizational context & sometimes in personal lives. Effectively it means that we as human beings don’t matter and the life of others keeps going on irrespective of your presence or absence. But is it so? While the world does move on in the absence of any human being, as it has to, but the question we need to ask is, is it the same without him, is it better or worse? Chances are, it is not the same. Often in organizational, national or group context we find someone who comes and changes the character of the group drastically. Sometimes it is for good & sometimes it is destructive. Either way, when he departs his absence is felt. When a good person leaves, it becomes difficult to fill the void & the lives of many become tough. But when a demonic person departs – though examples can be many, Hitler may be a glaring one – world changes for better. Either way, it may not be appropriate to say that the absence of that person did not have any effect. Similarly, in personal lives someone’s arrival and departure can change the life of the individual permanently. That person may be friend, lover, spouse, child, teacher….this change may be towards any extreme, good or bad. I strongly feel that to say that ‘nobody is indispensable’ is belittling our importance as individuals & human beings and the contribution we make to the society. But then, as human beings we all have to go – from organizations, nations and the world. And we all have a unique place in the scheme of things, where our absence does have an impact. Challenge therefore is to dilute this ‘indispensability’ to the extent possible, knowing fully well that it can’t be erased completely. In the organizational or governance context create worthy people ready to take over from you who not only carry your legacy, but improve upon it, when you happen to go. As individuals, try not to be so important for anyone that your absence from his life makes it difficult for that person to live. After all, they are your loved ones. On the flip side, don’t make anyone or any organization indispensable for you. Don’t make any one person indispensable for the organization. There is no permanence in any relationship, personal or organizational. Every relationship, personal or organizational, has to break one day. Question is never ‘if’ but ‘when’.  So be prepared for ‘dispensability’ of that relationship. Lesson is that while no human is ‘dispensable’, we as human beings have to work consciously towards ‘dispensability’ of every individual.

  1. Incredible!
Sometime we are just too busy in life that we forget about the little things that matter. We hardly notice change as it happens so often. This post is the reminder of things we don’t always see. Things that we don’t notice.
    Hope to see more 🙂

    1. Thank you for your encouraging comment Sarbani ji. As you can see, I’ve named it as My Little Thoughts of Life. These are just my own understanding of life as I see it. And I may just be the blind man feeling the leg of an elephant and saying that elephant is a pillar..:)

  7. Very nice read….so very true…..could easily relate to so many things that happen all the time around us.

Though my heart says that nobody is dispensable but by nature everybody is indispensable in life. Life is nothing but change and change is Nature’s delight.

Whenever a person moves out in our life, be it personal or professional, we go through a sorting process for some time, let go things one by one and choose to make a new start again. The spirit of life sees a star in the night of death and chooses a brand new beginning each time every time.
